Description

Registration for this event closes on 20 January 2020 at 10 PM GMT.

The competition will be held on 22 January 2020 from 6 PM to 10 PM GMT.

eSentinel is a “King of the Hill” style assessment and defense cyber competition where the goal is to capture and defend as many resources as you can. The game starts with a series of virtual targets – each with an identified scored service running on it. Your team’s goal is to penetrate targets, mark the scored service with your team’s token, and hang onto that target as long as you can. High point total at the end of the event wins. Targets must continue to provide the identified scored service – a web server must keep providing content, DNS servers need to resolve requests, etc. If a scored service fails 6 consecutive service checks it is reset to its starting configuration.

The competition is free and open to any college or university within Europe. Team size is 2 to 4 members and all players must be registered students of the institution they are representing. Institutions may register more than one team, but players may only participate on a single team. To register, we ask that only the team captain or team POC register for the event on behalf of your entire team. All communications will go to the registered team captain or POC. Please only select 1 ticket when registering your team. Each team must have a separate team captain or POC.

Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.

FAQ:
Q: Where can I find more information about eSentinel?
A: http://www.esentinel.org

Q: How do we connect to the eSentinel environment?
A: Each registered team will be issued a set of VPN credentials that will allow you to access the eSentinel environment.

Q: When will we get these credentials?

A: Credentials will be sent out after starting 6 January. Teams will have access to a practice environment prior to the competition on 22 January.

Q: What if we've never done something like this before ?
A: Not a problem. This is a great environment to practice and learn. The practice environment has "how to" videoes that provide step-by-step instructions for breaking into and marking some of the practice targets.

Q: Can we attack targets someone else owns?
A: Absolutely! If you can take it from them it’s more points for you and less for them.

Q: Can we DoS a target someone else owns?
A: Network flooding and ARP spoofing attacks are not allowed, but a targeted DoS such as an overflow attack are allowed.

Q: What tools can we use?
A: Anything but a commercial tool you had to pay for. Tools/scripts you built yourself, open source, Freeware, and Trialware are all acceptable.

Q: So we have to provide our own tools?
A: Absolutely. If you’re not sure where to find tools, we suggest looking at Kali Linux https://www.kali.org/.

Q: Can we lock down targets once we have control of them?
A: Absolutely! Just make sure you keep providing public access to the scored service. The scoring engine changes IP addresses frequently.

Q: What happens if I break a target?
A: If the scored service on a target fails 6 service checks in a row, it is automatically reset to its starting configuration.

Q: What kind of targets will there be?
A: The targets are virtual machines running a wide variety of operating systems and applications.

Q: Can we swap out team members during events?
A: No. Once a competition begins, no player swaps are allowed.
